It can be a challenge keeping the kids entertained during a weekend or holiday stay. Here at Springfield Lakes Hotel we endeavour to keep all our guests, big and small happy. So here are our top 11 ideas to get your kids excited during your memorable stay with us:
1. Robelle Domain
Perfect for kids of all ages, Robelle Domain parklands offers various features and facilities including Orion Lagoon, waterfalls, cafe, water cascades, water play area and activities and interactive playground, shady picnic areas, land art pyramids, art work, exhibition gardens, tree top walks and large open green spaces to run or kick a football.
Also look out for special events happening at Robelle Domain such as the Giant Screen showing movies and Springfield Markets.
2. Orion Springfield Central
Keep the kids occupied by shopping at Orion Springfield Central. Play at the new interactive pop-jet Water Fountain in Town Square, and afterwards pick up a towel from Customer Service to dry off. Once they have worked up a hunger try one of the restaurants in Town Square, then catch a movie at the amazing 2,000 seat Event Cinema complex on Level 1 at Orion.
3. Ipswich City Mobile Library
Take the kids to the library. The Ipswich City Council Mobile Library offers a range of library books, DVDs and CDs for hire, as well as a children’s reading area and internet access. The mobile library visit every Thursday and fortnightly on a Wednesday on Southern Cross Circuit, opposite the Orion Lagoon.
4. Walk or Cycle The Lakes
Take the kids for a walk or cycle around the 20 kilometres of meandering walking and bike trails. Be surrounded by a unique environment with 3 lakes at the heart; shady lakeside walks, scenic picnic spots, water themed playgrounds, and water activities on the lake. With more than 28 parks and diverse green spaces there is plenty of nature to absorb.
There is a variety of walks you can undertake including Regatta Lake promenade walk, walking paths and boardwalks around Discovery Lake, Spring Lake and Regatta Lake and the tree top walk at Robelle Domain.
5. Play at Grande Park
This park is popular for families because it has a climbing wall with two big slides, plus it also has pathways featuring a traffic track with signage. Bring along scooters, bikes and skates to take advantage of this great feature. Grande Park also has recreational pathways, a skate park section and open grassy spaces.
Other facilities at the park include toilets, shelter, barbeques, benches, drinking water and a dog off-leash area nearby. For older kids there is a basketball court and a netball court.
Grande Park is located at 40 Grande Avenue in Springfield Lakes.
6. Discover White Rock – Spring Mountain Conservation Park
This 2,500ha park features extensive forested ridges, escarpments and valleys that are home to an amazing array of plant and wildlife species. Visitors can enjoy the full gamut of outdoor activities including hiking, bird-watching, horse riding (bring your own horses), mountain bike riding and nature study. For the bushwalker there’s everything from a leisurely 200 metre walk to the more challenging 19 kilometre round trip trail with most of the trails are suitable for hiking and mountain bike riding.

7. Visit Ipswich Nature Centre
The Ipswich Nature Centre in Queens Park, Ipswich offers a range of Australian wildlife, lush landscaped gardens and exhibits that have been recreated to represent local bushland and flora communities. There are shady walkways which are the perfect vantage point from which to see the cute native animals including wombats, wallabies, emus, quolls, snakes, and even bilbies.
Follow the boardwalk further as it meanders through authentic habitats for our native animals including the nocturnal bilby exhibit and rainforest bird aviary, alive with colour and sound. Then there’s the barn where the younger ones won’t be able to resist farm animals such as pigs, calves, guinea pigs and lambs.

As of 1st February 2019 the Park is currently closed due to a bat colony moving to the reserve, once it it safe and practical for all the park will re-open. Please check for the most current updates at Ipswich Nature Reserve.
8. The Workshops Rail Museum
It’s big, it’s hands-on, it’s colourful, it’s educational but most of all it’s FUN! Featuring a dedicated children’s adventure playground aptly named ‘Nippers Railway’, a huge model railway – the largest model railway of Queensland anywhere in the world, real trains and multimedia exhibitions are packed into the Museum and include a diesel train simulator.
Activities just for your nipper are dotted through the Museum such as art and craft activities at the permanent Creation Station, plus dress-ups to play the part as a station master, train driver or porter. During School Holidays the Museum run great programs to keep the kids entertained all day every day.

9. Ipswich Civic Centre Show
See one of the fantastic children’s shows at Ipswich Civic Centre that are scheduled throughout the year, particularly during school holidays. It is a centre of excellence in events, entertainment, exhibitions and even more.

10. River Heart Parklands Ipswich
River Heart playground in Ipswich boasts 3 sandpit areas, water-play activities with 4 large water pumps for children to experiment with, swings, a flying fox, a large climbing frame with a slide and lots of smaller points of interest. The kids can move around to all the areas and have a ball. The park it is also designed so there are plenty of bench seats for adults, fake grass near the sandpit area to wipe your feet to effectively get rid of sandy feet, a large grassed area, balance beams in amongst the trees and even a shower to remove the sand after play.
The park is open to 10pm each evening and features a water and lights display each night from 6.30pm-10.00pm.
River Heart is located right on the bank of the Bremmer river at King Edward Parade, Ipswich.
11. Walston Farmhouse Wacol
Give you kids a taste of Brisbane’s heritage at the historical Wolston Farmhouse, the nineteenth century farmhouse oozes charm of a bygone era. Discover the charm of the rural Wolston Farmhouse with a guided tour or uncover the gems for your self at your own pace.
